Speaker: Darlene Sala | Series: Encouraging Words | I used to wonder how much I should compliment my kids as they were growing up. After all, I didn’t want them to get the big-head and think they’re better than they are.  On the other hand, how are our kids going to know they’re good at something unless we tell them? They need to know we believe in them and believe they’re going to survive the struggles they go through as they pursue their dreams.

Then one day I noticed that on at least two occasions God the Father publicly complimented His Son. In an audible voice He announced to the world, “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17; 17:5 NKJV). The first time was when Jesus was baptized, and the second time was when He was transfigured into His heavenly body on a mountain top.

I believe that sets a pattern for us as earthly parents.  When they do well, we need to tell our kids that we’re pleased with them. We’re certainly quick enough to tell them when we’re not pleased!

Singer-comedian Mark Lowry declares that, growing up, he was the family brat. Diagnosed with ADHD, he evidenced all the difficulties of the hyperactive child who was continually getting into trouble. But every night when his mom tucked him in bed, she told him, “Mark, one day God’s going to use you!” And Mark never forgot it.  And that hyperactive child matured into a gifted adult that God has used to bless thousands with his musical talent and clever wit, including writing the lyrics to the well-known Christmas carol “Mary, Did You Know?”

No, I’m not in favor of giving kids trophies just for showing up.  But, Mom and Dad, when you see your offspring doing well, tell them. You can be the incentive that helps them develop their full potential for God.
