As we interact with the Bible, we should know that the Holy Spirit speaks through scripture.  Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is living and active.  This is because it’s the Holy Spirit that guides our minds when we read.

Jesus said that the Word of God–the gospel and its implications–are like seed scattered on many types of soil. The soils represent different people and their ability or willingness to hear and respond to the Holy Spirit. When we are willing to listen, passages of scripture impact us differently, at different times because of whatever may be going on in our lives. In this way, interacting with scripture is not simply for the purpose of adding to our knowledge, but it is an opportunity to experience the Holy Spirit adjusting our eyes and ears and moving our hearts. The Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than a sword, it can slice close enough to penetrate deeply into our lives. (Hebrews 4:12)

Scripture may not change the circumstances of your life, but it will change you. The Holy Spirit can break through to us like a knife blade, when we are prepared to hear. Matthew 13 says it is difficult to hear when we are not rooted in truth, easily swayed by hardships or deceived by wealth. Let’s pray for willingness to hear and understand the Living Word.
