What Does It Mean That God Is Supreme?
Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11
Supremacy is the “condition of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status.” We tend to think of political leaders who declare their power supreme or one group declaring supremacy over another. Yet no human is truly supreme, because each of us eventually dies, and our influence for good or evil along with us.
God, however, has neither a beginning nor ending. He never grows tired and He has no limitations. He is steadfast and His wisdom is boundless beyond time itself. Because of His supremacy, there are things God does not do. He never lies, for He is Truth itself (Numbers 23:19). He cannot create evil, for nothing that is evil is of God (1 John 1:5).
It can be frustrating that we are incapable of fully understanding God because He transcends our comprehension. Even our efforts to define Him only limit who He really is. The biggest things we can fathom, such as the enormity, complexity, and mystery of outer space are only a small reflection of God’s creation.
How spectacular that a God of such magnitude loves each of us individually. In His Supremacy He chooses you. Nothing in the entire vast universe limits God’s ability to care for you tenderly. You worship a God superior in power and authority to every ruler and every group throughout history and in our present age. Keep this close to your heart today!
