Would you say that you’ve heard the voice of God? He does speak to us but we don’t always hear Him.

Moses, Abraham, Jonah, Adam & Eve, Noah. It’s an exclusive club. All these people in the Bible heard directly from God–He spoke to them. But God didn’t stop speaking to people back in Old Testament times. The Bible says, “Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through the Son as an inheritance…” (Hebrews 1:1-2).

It’s easy to miss God’s voice in our lives through busyness or by deliberately plugging our ears. But God is creative. Jonah didn’t want to hear what God wanted to say and God used a whale to help him hear. A man named Balaam also didn’t want to listen and God spoke to him by making his donkey talk! (Read about that one in the book of Numbers 22).

Jesus said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand,” adding, “…pay close attention” (Mark 4:24). God speaks in just the way that each of us need to hear at the time. Once, Elijah, God’s prophet in the Old Testament, was completely exhausted and utterly discouraged. He was hiding away in a cave when God met him and called him out to talk with him. There was a windstorm, an earthquake, “And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12). And then, God whispered exactly what Elijah needed to hear.
