The Best Homecoming is Yet to Come

There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.  If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. John 14:1-3

Life can be brutal, but there’s one place we go to for comfort, belonging and welcome.  We call that place home.

A big part of going home is getting to be with those that we love.  Whether it’s eating together, playing a game or flopping together on the sofa watching a movie, home means more than just physically being under one roof.

When Jesus Christ’s work on earth was nearing completion, He told His followers, “I’m going home to my Father now!” But, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled,” (John 14:1). “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.  If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am” (John 14:1-3).

Here on earth, before we welcome people home we make up a bed and stock up on good things to eat. So, Jesus told His followers that He was going home to get things ready for His followers to be together with Him and His Father and everyone who has ever said yes to His invitation of salvation.

This homecoming is available only through Jesus. He declared, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

This is what we know:  Jesus promises to live with us forever in a place He’s preparing in heaven. He promises to come back to get His followers and He is the only way to get to this prepared place in heaven—our true home.

Jesus still says, “There is more than enough room.”
