So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Sanity is defined as “the ability to think and behave in a normal and rational manner;” or, having “sound mental health.” Now, your sanity might not be my sanity because today we realize there’s something called neurodiversity, which means that brain differences are normal.

But we may all question our sanity when we experience true hardship—when we go through things like pandemics, that upend the systems we use to understand our world. Why does disease rage?  Why do the kindest people get terminal illnesses? Is God a good God? It’s these mind-bending, soul-rattling questions that shake the bounds of our sanity. Our reactions either drive us toward God or put us in opposition to Him.

Feeling like we’ve lost a grip on a reality or structure that we’d leaned on, is an opening to lean on Jesus. Paul’s distress call to God was answered with the assurance that God’s grace is sufficient for us, His power is perfected in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we are completely lost, we are more able to see our need for a Savior. We cannot know the strength of a bridge over raging waters until we test it with the weight of our lives.

Your place in God’s hands is safe, secure, and strong. Seek encouragement in God’s Word. Memorize Isaiah 41:10 and hang onto it!  There you will find sanity that far surpasses our limited human wisdom.
