Our Hope Amidst Falling Stars

The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.  Matthew 24:29

Throughout history, there have been some incredible celestial events. In 1833 and 1966, there were huge meteor showers that, from Earth, looked as if stars were falling like snowflakes. Scientists predicted the meteor showers, but many people were frightened to watch, fearing they were signs of the end of the world.

Peter wrote in the Bible, “The heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat; and all the works therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). Scientists assure us that, with the splitting of the atom, what Peter wrote has become a vivid possibility. Scientists also confirm that the Earth is gradually slowing, as if it were a clock slowly unwinding.

So too, the Book of Revelation is full of mysterious descriptions of Endings. More importantly however, the Bible gives us insight into our present lives. It tells us where we came from and where we are going. It tells of life after death, but also how to live with purpose and meaning now. The Bible emphasizes a relationship with God through His Son that touches our present existence, not just the mysterious future. Jesus came that you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).

How we live now is of eternal importance, because even after this world is gone, our souls will live on. When you see a falling star, remember that beyond our current state is a loving God whom you can know through His Son, Jesus.
