In the beginning was the Word.  And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.   John 1:1

When God wanted to reveal Himself to humans, he didn’t start a YouTube channel, he wrote a book. God used words.  Words matter to God.

Today, the video streaming service, Netflix, is in 190 countries.  By and large, we’ve all stopped reading and started watching. We’re addicted to a life of entertainment, a life writer Marshall Segel calls, “The Blissful and Trivial Life.”[1]  Our screens go with us everywhere endlessly bombarding us with empty entertainment.

For the follower of Jesus, this is important to ponder because, as Segel points out, “The fullest Christian life is firmly anchored in words and sentences and paragraphs.”[2]

In the beginning was the Word,” says the Bible book of John, “and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1,14).  The book of Hebrews says that “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Yes, long ago, God gave us the secret to prospering and succeeding in all that we do: “Study this Book of Instruction continually,” He said. “Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it.  Only then will you prosper and succeed in all that you do” (Joshua 1:9).  It was true then.  It is true now.
