How To View God Clearly

You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

Matthew 22:29

What you believe about God affects many aspects of your life: your relationships, your sense of morality, your purpose, and your self-worth. Yet what we believe about God is often a hodge-podge of ideas and perceptions, perhaps formed in childhood and reinforced by personal experiences, both good and bad. With distorted understanding, we blame Him for our own choices and the crushing realities of life.

One common misunderstanding of God’s nature is that He is characterized by anger, always seeking revenge against sinners. We reflect this view when we believe hardships in our lives are a judgement or punishment God inflicts on us. This distorted view leads to fear-based faith, or else defiance against God.

In reality, God is so full of love for us that He sent His Son to pay for our sins through His own death! The Bible says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us…There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:16,18).

God will not be defined by us, but you can know Him personally and learn what He is like.  Scripture is full of examples of the character of God, in His own words. Turn to scripture to gain a better understanding of who God is.  Read the Bible today, setting aside the stories we tell ourselves, for the real story.
