For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12

Do you read the Bible?  Ever feel unsure when it comes to interpreting and applying  scripture? Interpretation and application are very important because they affect how we live out our beliefs, including how we treat others. They bear witness to the name of Jesus that we profess.

Usually, the clearest, simplest interpretation of scripture is the correct one. Some people think that only those with great spiritual insights can understand the Bible. Be suspicious of anyone claiming they have special and exclusive understanding of scripture. God gave his Word to everyone! That means that through the Holy Spirit you can discern what God says in scripture.

Applying scriptural truth should also be relatively straightforward. The purpose of God’s Word is to help us know how to live. The Bible is amazing because it reveals God’s care for us in both big and small ways. The Bible is a map of God’s plan for His creation, including guidelines for healthy living for our minds, bodies, and relationships.

When learning how to apply scripture, ask the Holy Spirit to help you answer the question: “What does this mean in my life?” God gave us the Holy Spirit to be with us and to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). The Bible is the Word of God, living and active (Hebrews 4:12). No matter how often you re-read it, the Bible speaks to us in the here and now. Allow it to change your life!
