Here is the Way to a Life of Rest
For only we who believe can enter his rest. Hebrews 4:3a
Human beings have lived with invasions, plagues, famines and fear since the beginning of history. If you’re resigned to living with a sense of continual unrest, keep listening!
Rest on every side. Doesn’t that just have a good sound to it? That’s what the Bible says that God gave to a tired-out people. Scripture says, “And the Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised (Joshua 21:44). The reassuring news is that God is still in the business of giving rest to those He loves. “There is a special rest still waiting for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9) and “God’s promise of entering his rest still stands” (Hebrews 4:1), the Bible book of Hebrews says.
This life of rest is found through living in obedience to God. The book of Hebrews explains, “God’s rest is there to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God (Hebrews 4:6).
Theologian John Owen described this rest as the “state of a satisfied soul.” God longs for us to live this satisfied life of peace with Him and the Bible is the roadmap for this journey. The description of God’s rest in the book of Hebrews ends with this declaration: “For the word of God is alive and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12). Taking in God’s Word daily and letting it change you is a key to the satisfied soul–the soul that’s free from living with a sense of fear and foreboding about the future.
Do you need rest today? We have all disobeyed God, but Scripture says, “So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today” (Hebrews 4:7).
