The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10 NKJV

Did you ever play the schoolyard game of tag as a kid? There was always a homebase you could run to, where you’d be safe and no one could get you!

The idea of a “safe space” has become popular–as a place you can escape to, that’s free from others making you feel uncomfortable, threatened, or criticized. When we’re in physical danger, we need a bomb shelter. But God knew that in everyday life, we’d face situations that are fearful and that we would need safety.

That’s why Scripture tells us that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:19 NIV) and that His name is a “strong tower”– it’s a place that godly people can run to and be safe (Proverbs 18:10). In fact, He is our only sure place of refuge.

More often than not, though, we don’t turn to God with our fears, anxiety and fatigue. We choose distractions. Worried about kids or aging parents or a big test coming up? There are kitten videos to watch. Bad marriage? Pornography is waiting for you. There are sports to follow, endless work to keep doing, a drink and something to help you sleep or relax. You’re in good company if you’ve reached for any of these destructive counterfeits.

When our distractions become to us what only Jesus can, we are left with despair. Jesus offers His presence, His Spirit and His living words to you. No matter who you are, how you’ve lived, He calls you into repentance and refuge in the strong tower of His name. He says, that the one who comes to Him will never be turned away (John 6:37). Jesus is your only safe space.
