God Wants To Visit With You

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.” Psalm 27:8

I’ve developed a habit that helps me keep my friendships alive.  At the conclusion of having coffee with a friend, I make sure we put another date on the calendar to be together–even if it’s months and months away! Because we need to be together to have relationship.

In the same way, we need to be together with God to have relationship with Him. “Come and talk with me,” God said to David, the writer of the Psalms, and God says this to you as well (Psalm 27:8). “Oh, you’re talking about prayer,” you might think, but that’s not quite it.

Our times of prayer are often quick, one-way, and transactional. God wants to visit with you.  He wants to share the most minute details of your struggles, your joys, your questions–much like the communication between two good friends that happens over coffee.

We get a look at what the intimate relationship God desires to have with us looks like later in Psalms, as David talks to God: “Oh Lord,” he says, “you have examined my heart and know everything about me.  You know when I sit down or stand up.  You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.  You see me when I travel and when I rest at home.  You know everything I do.  You know what I am going to say even before I say it” (Psalm 139:1-4).

The next time God says, “Come and talk with me,” may we respond like David with, “Lord, I am coming.”
