Cry Out To The Lord In Your Times Of Trouble

Speaker:

So much of life keeps us in turmoil. Have you noticed that just when you think you can’t cope with another crisis, you’re slammed with a new one? Like a ship tossed around in a storm, you struggle to deal with the latest urgent situation that challenges you.

The writer of Psalm 107 described a parallel situation that sailors faced when gale winds struck. Using poetic terms, he depicted monster waves pounding their ship. These are his words:

[The sailors] mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;

in their peril their courage melted away.

They reeled and staggered like drunken men;

they were at their wits’ end. (verses 26-27)

Can you identify? Between caring for a sick child, meeting the latest crisis at work, and dealing with the doctor’s report that you have a serious physical condition, right now you may be in the middle of one of those raging storms. If so, do what Psalm 107 says the sailors did.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,

and he brought them out of their distress.

He stilled the storm to a whisper;

the waves of the sea were hushed.

They were glad when it grew calm,

and he guided them to their desired haven. (verses 28-30)

Sometimes it takes a long time before the storm abates and life settles down again. But know that God does not leave you in the storm. He’s right there to give you strength all the way. Follow the advice the writer of Psalm 107 gave to the sailors: “Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men” (verse 31).
