Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything else was created and is supreme over all creation…For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ and through him God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. Colossians 1:15,19-20.

 

Do you remember what you said as a kid, when a sibling tried to tell you what to do? Did you yell, “You’re not the boss of me?”

 

We humans don’t like it very much when we have to “bow to” or answer to someone else. We unhappily complain when someone is “lording their authority over us.” But whoever you are, whether you consider yourself religious or not, you may be surprised to learn that Jesus Christ is your Lord. In fact, He is Lord of all.

 

The Bible book of Colossians explains that through Jesus, God created everything; Jesus possesses all of God’s nature, all of His authority and all of His power. Scripture says that “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything else was created and is supreme over all creation” (Colossians 1:15). John Beeman simply puts it this way: “There is no sphere that exists that Jesus isn’t sovereign over…We don’t make Jesus Lord of our lives; we acknowledge Him as Lord!”[1]

 

Choosing to acknowledge Jesus’s authority in your life changes your now and your eternity. Scripture points out that “…God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ and through him God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross” (Colossians 1:19-20). This is the good news that we call the gospel: Jesus had the authority to make peace with God for us. Now we respond by acknowledging our need for Him and His right to rule in us.
