This Name Is Unlike Any Other
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21
You can often tell when a person was born by the name they were given. My grandparents were Delmer and Orpha Audrey. At the time I was born lots of names ended in the “eee” sound, like Robby and Debbie. Today, little Sophias, Rileys, Emmas and Aidens are being born.
The Bible tells of one name, given thousands of years ago, that is above every other name–the name given to Jesus. The Book of Philippians explains that, “God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).
Have you noticed that it’s fairly easy to bring up “God” in conversation with people, but the minute that you start talking about Jesus, the room gets very quiet? The name of Jesus is polarizing and powerful.
The Bible gives reasons why the name of Jesus is power-filled: First, it says that “there is no other name by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). His is the only saving name there is. His Name vanquishes spiritual evil, for the name of Jesus carries all authority in heaven and on earth, given to Him by His Father (Matthew 28:18). And Jesus said that using His name is key when we pray. God the Father grants requests in accordance with his will, in Jesus’ name (John 16:23-4).
Let’s not hesitate to speak the beautiful name of Jesus!
